Obituary for
Frederick E. Harrigan
Rensselaer-Frederick E. Harrigan age, 87 years, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015. Fred was born in Rensselaer and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a 1951 graduate of Sienna College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Fred was a US Navy Veteran of WW II; at the age of 15 he borrowed his brothers ID and joined the Navy. He was a retired Optician. Fred was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Church in Rensselaer attending St. Joseph’s Church for many years. He loved the City of Rensselaer and was involved in many capacities in the city. Fred was a founding member of the Rensselaer Volunteer Ambulance, Commissioner of the Rensselaer Housing Authority, Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Dept. Commissioner of the Port of Albany as the Rensselaer Representative, Honorary Life Member of Rensselaer Council 267 KofC, over 50 year member of the Rensselaer Kiwanis Club, Gerald O’Neil American Legion Post 1683 in Rensselaer, President of Rensselaer Common Council and Alderman for the City of Rensselaer and Director of the Rensselaer Youth Bureau. He succeeded his brother Joe as the Master of Ceremonies for the Rensselaer Memorial Day Parade.
Son of the late Joseph E. and Elizabeth O’Brien Harrigan; husband of the late Mary Kennedy Harrigan; father of James Harrigan and the late Patrick Harrigan; brother of the late Kathryn Quinn, Elizabeth Smith, Rosemary Beardsley and Joseph Harrigan. Dear friend of Joy Lloyd. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral will be from the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home 1700 Washington Avenue Rensselaer Thursday morning at 11:00. All are welcome to attend. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4-7 pm. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.
