Condolence From: The Grub Family
Condolence: Alan was an indelible part of our lives, always an intellectual with brilliant insight. He was also an artist whose presence will be forever in our hearts through the wedding pictures he took for Barbara and Heinz. But more than that, he was a pillar of strength for Maude and a part of the family, one which will be sorely missed for many years to come. All our prayers and love go out to him and Maude at this time.

Condolence: Dear Maude, I can't help but remember being on top of the ladder during our first performance of 24 Hour Watch and being utterly terrified. And then, I noticed someone sitting at the top of the stairs in the shadows. It was Alain watching the performance. In my memory, the height of the ladder was such that our faces were almost level. As soon as I saw him, I felt safe. I have very fond memories of my days at eba and Alain was such a big part of that. He was always nearby and always up for a conversation about anything at all. My condolences to you. - Jen

Condolence From: William Harding
Condolence: A couple of days fter visiting Alain
for the last time on May 11,
I drove home to Maine
through the back roads of Vermont.
I passed through the Green Mountains amid
the clouds and the sunshine and the spring showers.
I stopped at a little graveyard by the Bennington Church
where Robert Frost is buried
to read his Epitaph:

“I had a Lover’s Quarrel with the World”

Alain had a Love Affair with the World

I wondered what Alain’s epitaph might have been?
(He wouldn’t have wanted one.)

Then I saw the epitaph of a man who lived and died
during the 1700’s.
His gravestone had a quote from Shakespeare inscribed:

“…..make dust our paper
and with Rainy Eyes
write 'Sorrow' in the Bosom of the Earth.”

Too flouncy for Alain.

I drove on, and passed a little church
With a GLBT rainbow flag
And a marquee reading:

“God is Still Speaking”.

Hmmm.
An ambiguous message
On many levels
To many different audiences.

As I drove on, I thought of Alain.
I don’t want to feel sad, but I do;
Sad: because Alain will not be part
Of my future
But only my past.

Alain: what would your epitaph be,
If you were to have one?

There is nothing more to say.
